Art & Design at St Patrick’s

“Every child is an artist.”

At St Patrick’s, we believe that art is more than just a lesson—it is a way for children to explore their world, express their feelings, and build their confidence. Our curriculum is designed to nurture every child’s unique creativity from their first day in Early Years until they leave in Year 6.

Our Vision

We want every pupil at St Patrick’s to:

  • Love Creating: Find joy in making art, regardless of their starting point.

  • Master Skills: Develop real technical ability in drawing, painting, sculpture, and more.

  • Be Inspired: Discover diverse artists, designers, and craft makers from across history and the globe.

  • Grow Resilience: Feel brave enough to take risks, experiment, and learn from their mistakes.

How We Learn

Our art curriculum is practical, hands-on, and built step-by-step:

  • Expert Guidance: Teachers model techniques clearly before children dive in.

  • Sketchbook Culture: Every child uses a sketchbook to gather ideas, practice new skills, and track their creative journey.

  • High-Quality Tools: We provide a wide range of materials—from clay and charcoal to digital media and textiles.

  • Artist Studies: We look at “the greats” to spark new ideas and understand how art shapes our culture.

The Result

When our pupils leave St Patrick’s, they aren’t just “good at drawing”—they are confident creators. They leave us with:

  • A “toolkit” of artistic techniques they can use independently.

  • The vocabulary to talk about and reflect on their own work.

  • A sense of pride in what they have achieved.

  • The firm belief that their imagination and ideas truly matter.

“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way—things I had no words for.”Georgia O’Keeffe

Attainment targets

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.

In addition to this, we also have our resident artist, Chas Jacobs who comes into school twice monthly to work with the children on Art projects. There are lots of examples of work around school. Take a look!
